Mr. Pookie

"In Snow White, when the witch fell, did she die?" asked Susie.

"I think so, yes," said her dad.

Susie thought about that in horror. "Is she really dead? She was a good witch."

"It's just a story."

"But why does she have to be dead?"

"OK, let me tell you a story. Susie was playing in the garden. 'Would you like some tea, Mr. Pookie?', she asked.

"She held up the toy teacup to the teddy bear's mouth. 'Mm, guggle, glug bub', Susie said in her lowest voice, then giggled at Mr. Pookie talking while drinking. 'Oh that was very dainty,' she said.

"Then Susie notice the little box with a big red button that said 'Don't press me'.

"Her eyes went wide. She crawled over to look at it carefully. She reached out to press it, then didn't. She hid behind Mr. Pookie, then peeked out at it. It was still there, all red and unpressed. 'I think we should leave it alone,' she had Mr. Pookie say as low as she could. She stared. Carefully, she reached out, and pressed the button.

"The sides of the box fell out and the top fell down. Then Mr. Pookie's head fell off. Then Susie crumbled to dust and was dead. Then the sun vanished from the sky. And Susie's dad died and every one else died. And all the horses and dogs and cats died. And all the stars disappeared from the sky and all the space aliens died. And then the whole universe folded up on itself, and disappeared, and there was nothing left at all. The end."

Susie thought about this. "That's a bad story, Dad."

"But it's all OK," said her dad. "Because it's just a story. And nothing in stories is really real. You're still alive, Mr. Pookie is OK, I'm alive, all the horses and cats are dogs are still alive. You can use stories to see, if this happened, then that would happen next, without anything really getting hurt. They're useful."

Susie thought about it more. "It's still a bad story. I don't like it."

"Hm," said her dad.

"You mean the witch wasn't really alive ever? Because stories aren't really real?"

"That's true."

"But that's even worse than dying! She never existed at all! " Susie gasped. "And Grumpy and Dopey a, a, a, and bbBashful?"

"All made up."

"But I LOVE Bashful!" Susie started crying. "Daddy, I don't think I like ANY stories!"

"Hm," said her dad, at a loss.
