Last night I saw a newborn baby.
I forgot you were once that small.
That first month: a blur of nursing, diaper changes,
recovery and snatching sleep.
Holding a warm, sleeping little baby against you.
There is nothing quite as peaceful.
A friend said to see the face of an angel, look at the face of a sleeping baby.
You were my angel baby.
I forgot you were once that small.
Your two-toothed, drooly little smile made everything easier.
You discovered your hands while Daddy and I discovered unbounded love.
My poor baby, you hated your immunization shots;
sometimes hurt is necessary to help.
Did you know that others adored you and came great distances to see you?
One day you needed more than Mommy could give you so Grandma fed
you your first solid baby food.
Did you know a baby can be better medicine than anything
anyone could ever take?
I forgot you were once that small.
Your energetic squeals, funny sounds and happy laughter made us happy, too.
With Grandpa's long coaching, your first word was "Mamamama" which made
Mommy glow.
Did you know that one of life's greatest gifts is a baby?
Peek-a-boo with blankets was simply the greatest game ever.
You got so excited seeing the world a different way on your tummy.
Did you know how ecstatic we were when you started sleeping for
more than four hours at once?
I forgot you were once that small.
Soon those little chubby leggies discovered crawling.
Waving things around while sitting up was so much fun.
Next came standing and learning to un-stand.
So, too, came little tumbles with much tears, complaining
and outstretched arms for Mommy.
Mommy gives good snuggles.
A Mommy must be a goddess in a baby's eyes.
I forgot you were once that small.
A faltering, wobbly, stepping baby quickly became toddler baby.
Simple things became newly found treasures.
You got upset if you didn't see or hear Mommy.
My little baby, Mommy was never that far.
Mommy and Daddy are here to keep you safe.
And warm, dry and fed, loved.
I forgot you were once that small.
Oh, my little big baby.
Very soon you won't be my baby anymore so I get my snuggles while I can:
Feel your warm little head against my cheek,
hold you close and rock you while I can.
Oh, my little big baby--I will always remember when you were this small.
Love,
Your Mommy
P.S. Your Mommy is such a musher.
